About the Top 500 and the Presentation
Now about my Top 500 and the presentation. Since there is a lot of chart information to see I decided I would post 50 positions a week. I have also made a few notes about each song and those will be posted too. So, over the next 10 weeks the entire 500 will be posted.
The years that compromise much of the countdown are 1967-1978. This has made sense since at 7 years old when I really started paying attention to the radio. 1969 was when I started buying 45’s and around 1974 was when I started to buy albums. Songs from this period evoke many memories from my youth which is why they remain my favorites to this day. In my notes you will often see me mention my vinyl collection in past tense as “Had” this 45” or “Had this Album”. It still pains me to this day, but I lost it all during a move in 1992 with my entire vinyl 45’s and albums in boxes being left in the hot sun.
Much of my countdown has songs that most Fox listeners are at least familiar with, and I know tons of them are in the rotation but there are still a lot that are not so familiar. It will be interesting to see on the obscure ones how many are known by Fox listeners. Also, it will have its own section in the archives. I am not sure how the comments section works on the blog, but unlike the main blog this would be a good place to leave comments good or bad about any of the songs.
I think so much of what makes any given song special to each of us as individuals is all about memories, rather they be good or bad and what songs come to mean to us over the years shaped also by our personal tastes. Hopefully everyone will enjoy this blog.
How It Started And Developed
I started my Top 500 over a year ago when Brock announced he was working on his. It went through a lot of changes and initially I had a true favorite songs list but there were so many deep album cuts never released as singles and being I wanted it to be a “Countdown” with chart positions I decided it would be a “Pop” 500 and eventually decided all songs had to hit one of the 4 major charts (Billboard, Cashbox, Record World, and Radio and Records). As I was going along, I found several songs on my list that just bubbled under, but they did chart (courtesy of the “Comparison Book” by Joel Whitburn). These were included because they did chart.
Once that was decided on, I compiled my list which had well over 1,000 songs and I began making my choices. As this went along some songs which had made the cut were dropped and others that hadn’t moved up. How I did this was a whole lot of listening to the songs which I had downloaded into my car. As I went along, I found myself wanting to skip some songs, so they fell off the Top 500 list. As I was going along, I did the research and put in the peak positions, and I included the KHJ Boss Radio Top 30 positions (Southern California) and in doing this I discovered there we a fair number of songs that bombed nationally that were bigger hits locally.
There were times I remember thinking this is just too hard and I like too many songs but eventually I was comfortable with my Top 500 as it is and found most of the songs I had liked since they first came out but there were ones I discovered later that left such an impression on me I felt they had become among my favorite all-time song
